Can We walk to the Beach from the homes?
Our homes are perfectly set back from the beach just enough to provide a retreat from heat and insects that so often are an issue with directly on the beach homes. As mentioned above Casa Tucana is about a 10 min walk (4 min Drive) to the beach and Del Pacifico Estate is about a 30 (7 min Drive).
This being said you most defiantly can walk to the beach but we only really recommend doing so if exercise is your goal as it is VERRY warm here and walking with all your beach gear can be a bit much in the heat. Personally we walk and run to the beach all the time from the home for exercise in the morning and evening, but for beach surfing outings with Boards and trips to the beach with Children, a car is defiantly required.
In order to make the most of your trip with us and to have flexibility to really experience all that Costa Rica’s Central Coast has to offer, we require all of our guests to have a rental car or shuttle service during your stay with us.
For more information on these services please scroll below to the car rental and personal Driver sections.

Are the local beaches safe?
Costa Rica is know for its amazingly beautiful and diverse beaches.
Our local beaches within 5-20 min of the home are all renowned spots for surfing in Costa Rica with miles and miles of beach break and several reefs. From the heavy beach break of the renown popular Playa Hermosa, to the mellow longboard waves of Esterillos Oeste and the miles of uncrowded beach breaks and river-mouths to the south.
While they are lovely it is very important, especially while there is swell, to make sure regardless of how good of a swimmer or surfer you are, that you and your family are well educated about the potential dangers of the beaches here and how best to avoid them. Whether you are interested in joining us for some surf lessons as a beginner in the ocean, or are an experienced surfer looking for great waves, we will be able to help point you in the right direction.
When you check in we will help guide to the best beaches suited for you and your family and what are the best times and tides to visit them so you will be able to have as much fun as possible. The American Red Cross and several other sites have some beach safety tips and steps you can take to make sure you and your family remain safe.

What is the closest Airport and how far are you from it?
The closest international airport to Pura Vida Casas is Juan Santa Maria International Airport in San Jose, CR (code: SJO).
We are located about 2 hours on good roads from the airport. Please click the link below to see exact directions or read below.

From the Airport
If you were to walk out of the terminal then you will see
the highway directly in front of you. Make a mental note that Jaco is to the left and San Jose is to the right. So if you take a taxi or shuttle to get a rental car then make sure that you are heading toward Jaco since a lot of people make the mistake of going into San Jose instead. If you pick up a rental car from the airport then exit the airport and take the first off ramp only a few hundred meters ahead on the right side that points to Alajuela. That will spin you around and point you in the opposite direction heading toward Jaco. Immediately you have to merge onto another road and you want to stay in the left lane that has a sign pointing to San Ramon. Don’t go to the right where the sign points to Alajuela.
If you take a taxi or shuttle to a rental car place then you will most likely head toward San Jose. So once you get your car then get back on the highway and head back toward the airport. As you are approaching the airport the two left lanes will take you to the airport and the right lane will keep you on the highway where you want to go but make sure that you don’t take the first exit to the right that points to Alajuela.
From there it's going to take you about 8-10 minutes to where you have to exit on the right side for which there are many signs pointing to La Garita, Punta Leona, Orotina and a bunch of other towns and resorts. Once you exit, you're going to turn left and go over the small bridge. There is a sign that points you toward Los Suenos and Jaco.
Now you need to pay attention because after about 5 minutes after you made that left turn you will see a soccer field on your left side where you need to make a left turn. Once you make the left you will go down that small road for about 5 minutes until you see the toll road. Turn left right before you go under the highway and when you get to the traffic circle make two quick rights to get on the road toward Jaco (West).
You will hit a toll booth in about 5-10 minutes and the fee should be around 625 Colones ($1.25). The tolls range from 90 cents (450 Colones) to $1.25
(625 Colones) and you can pay with dollars if you do not have Colones and they will give you change in Colones.
After about 15 minutes you will hit the 2nd (and last) toll booth. After the toll you will immediately merge to the right to get off the highway onto the coastal road. There is a sign pointing to Jaco.
Once you get to Jaco stay on the main highway you are on and pass through Jaco towards Esterillos & Playa Hermosa. You will wind up a hill and around the coast then pass through Playa Hermosa and continue for another 10 min till you get to the Esterillos Area. Here is where the directions vary depending on which home you re staying in.

For DP Estate or Casa Azul, Oceana & Exotica:
Continue past the “Esterillos Oeste” sign and drive another 5-7 min till you get to the large row of buildings that are under construction with a large sign that says "Del Pacifico" on your left. You will take a left here and check in with the guard at the gate. They will know you are arriving. Head ~300 meters to the top of the hill then turn right at the guard house where you will see the homes on the right. Casa Cielo Azul is house # 1 Casa Oceana is house #2 and Casa Exotica is house #3. |
For Casa Tucana:
Turn right at the sign that says "Esterillos Oeste" which will be on your right (a key sign that you are there is that there is a fruit stand that is right by the turn off). You will take a right here and head ~300 meters down till you see the sign "Hills of Esterillos" which is the first community on the right. Go to the gate and tell the guard that you are checking into Casa #62. They will know you are arriving. Go straight on the road for roughly 200 meters till the road takes a sharp left turn up the hill Casa Tucana is the red house in the very corner of the development. |

Can you help us arrange a Car Rental for our Trip?
In order to have flexibility and to really experience all that Costa Rica’s Central Coast has to offer, we require all of our guests to have a rental car or shuttle service during your stay with us.
We can set up for you an all inclusive shuttle service for your entire vacation if you would like with our friend Robert (please read above for details) in which case we would need to schedule all your tours and activities in advance to ensure you are able to do everything you want to do on your vacation.
An alternate option is to have the convenience and luxury of your own rental car. Our homes, though in safe communities, are in the country about 15 minutes away from the closest taxi, which limits your flexibility to do what you want and when you want. It is also quiet expensive and you would probably end up saving money having your own car. Unlike San Jose which can be a little crazy to drive, the roads on the coast are much easier to navigate and we will help you with any precise directions you need upon arrival to local restaurants, beaches and attractions.
We have several Preferred and discounted rental companies 1 out of San Jose and several local rental companies out of Jaco Beach. When renting a car in costa rica please be advised that they have mandatory rental insurance here which is not shown on online quotes but will be added when you arrive to pickup the car. This is why we recommend specific all inclusive companies that include all basic insurance, as well as a free SJO Airport Shuttle transport for all week long rentals, offering you the best of both options. This is a unique service that saves our clients the hassle of needing to take a taxi from the airport to a nearby car rental agency and then navigate the roads to get to Esterillos on your own. These companies are fairly priced and will pick you up at the airport and take you straight to Jaco Beach to drop off the driver then you can drive yourselves the rest of the way to your rental home as from there it’s only 20 minutes to our homes.
Please see our site link below for rates and info.
Note: Rental cars and shuttles book up REALLY quickly so please let us know ASAP and we would love to set it up for your convenience at our preferred client discounted rate.

Do the homes have a phone number for making international & Local Calls?
In order to make the your vacation smooth, relaxing, and tons of fun, we require our guests to be reachable by a personal cell phone. That way you can have clear communication with us, your property managers at all times incase of any problems with the home or in an emergency situation. Your comfort and safety our our primary concerns. It also makes it much more easy and possible to facilitate the coordination of Activities and of Tours for you. Even if we put a schedule together prior to your trip, there are always last minute changes with whether or the need for directions while your en-route to your destination that a cell phone helps to minimize any frustration on your vacation.
In short, having a cell phone helps avoid so many potential problems and makes your time with us so much better that WE REQUIRE all of our guests to have at least one that functions for both calls in and calls out while in Costa Rica.
Our homes are NOT connected to a land line so you will need to do one of the following options for making calls:
Bring an Unlocked Phone with 3G access
Often our clients will talk to their carrier prior to their trip about getting a temporary international plan. Most companies in. the US seem to offer a daily rate plan ~$10 per day so you can use your phone as normal when abroad this is what we recommend.
However, If you have an unlocked iPhone or smart phone, when you arrive you can go to ICE (our main Cellphone company here) at the airport and purchase a prepaid Costa Rican SIM Card. This too can be complicated though as it depends on what kind of unlocking system you used. Just because the phone is unlocked doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for a Costa Rica SIM, it has to be properly unlocked to be compatible please talk with your specific provider and phone manufacturer for details on this.
Make International Calls on your Computer, Tablet or Smart Phone Through Skype & Face time
For guests traveling with a Computer Tablet or Smartphone this method may allow you to make very low cost international calls using your device connected to the homes WiFi. It cost roughly 10 cents/ minute to make international calls. (computers tables & iPhone's work best or Dual Mode Blackberrys).
If you decide to go this route and need to install Skype:
1) Go to Skype.com http://Skype.com on your computer and install the software and establish an account and add money on it.
2) Download the Skype App on your SmartPhone and then establish your account on it.
3) When on a wireless network, use the Skype App to dial to ground lines and connect calls *When powering on your cell phone internationally, make sure to TURN OFF ROAMING.
Of course, if you decide to go with either of the options 2-4, and they end up not working once you are here for whatever reason, we have cell phones on hand and can get you one upon check-in on the first day of your stay with us.

If an additional option works for you we are willing to discuss this so please please contact our booking representative to talk about these alternate options.

Do you have a Security Deposit?
We do not take a Security Deposit in Cash but we do require on our Check in document to take down 1 CC number per home incase of any incidentals. If something were to be broken or damaged during your stay with us this would be the card to be charged for such things. Any charges would be discussed with the guest prior to check out or by phone and email if something was discovered post checkout.
What is your Check in Procedure?
Check in Procedure
- Checkin time: Your Villa will be ready any time after 3:00 pm (we need this time to proved the deep cleaning necessary between guests) unless you have a pre approved early checkin time. Early checkin and late check out is available but is per availability and be confirmed the day before your arrival. Once you are on the road please message us at our CR number +506 8304-8474 so we can be ready for you incase you are delayed on the drive.
- Keys & Arrival: We offer self check via our door codes (which we will send the day before checkin) or pending availability we can personally checking with our onsite care taker or manager. Our on-site care takers Janet and her Husband Donald (they live in the apartment next to Villa 2 above the garage) will be there to assist and answer any questions you may have. We are also always available to assist should you need us via whats app or phone.
- Cleaning: Cleaning & the Safety of our guests is a top priority and we are following the Health Ministries recommendations for the sanitation during this time. Your home will be give to you clean and in order and should you desire to have daily cleaning services our cleaning team are available for you for $3 per hour to be directly to the girls in cash. Please let us know in advance if you would like to have them so we can coordinate that for you so you can relax and enjoy your stay with us!
- Electrical Allotment & Meter Reading: Our caretakers will take a meter reading for you upon checkin since your rental comes with a daily allotment which is sufficient to cover normal use of the home and minimal use of the ac for sleeping only (8pm-8am). The home is designed to stay fresh naturally and the hill top has beautiful natural breeze most all of the day and at night. The home has many fans and also has screens on the windows and doors so you can keep things open and stay cool naturally! If you choose to use more AC in the day time it will go over the daily allotment and for this we charge per KW over the included 50KW per night .70$ USD per KW exceeding the limit. We do not do this to make money only to cover our costs as the electrical is very high in CR and these are very large homes and due to our current promotional rates we have to cover our costs if guests wish to use more electrical. Our groups that use the AC more liberally end up paying around $50-$60 per night extra per home just to give you an idea of the costs if you choose to use more the Central AC system .

What is your Checkout Time & Procedure?
CHECK-OUT : 10AM
Inform the manager as soon as possible when you plan on checking out.
He or she can help you with making arrangements to get back to the airport or answer any questions you have about scheduling. Our standard check-out is by 10am, however if you need a later check out please arrange this ahead with the manager. We are happy to accommodate you if possible.
If you are enjoying your time with us and would like and are able to extend your stay to be able to do and see more of all the central pacific coast has to offer, or perhaps just want a few extra days to relax, let the manager know. Sometimes our guests have plans to travel to other parts of Costa Rica for their vacation but end up enjoying the home so much and realize there is so much more to do and see that they allotted time for in the coastal region, that its not uncommon for guests to want to stay a little longer. If your interested in extending your time with us for any length of time, talk to the manager and about your options and pricing. If the home is available, we will be happy to offer it to you at a significant discounted rate (as much as half off potentially),
Another common situation is when our guests have made plans to fly out of Costa Rica the next day, they make plans to find a last minute cheap hotel in San Jose near the airport. The only problem with this plan is the hotels around the airport are not exactly cheap, and often we can give you a significant discount as an incentive to stay an extra night with us and enjoy to the fullest your last full day of vacation. Why throw your entire day
away packing up all your bags to check out by 10 am the day before you leave, only to go straight to a hotel in San Jose where you will have to unload all your bags into the hotel room, if you have all ready dropped your rental car off or if you used a shuttle service, you will be stuck the entire day in a boring hotel. When our clients realize that our homes are less than 2 hours away from the airport, most opt for leaving early in the morning the next day, even if you have a early flight. And getting an early morning shuttle service is no problem either. There obviously are so many variables to take into account but we can help you think through it all in order to help you maximize your vacation time. Setting this all up prior as we discuss the dates you will be staying with us is ideal, but we will be able to help you out with last minute changes to your itinerary plan as well.
If you are leaving before 6 am in the morning, inform the manager as soon as possible and he will meet with you the night prior to walk through the check-out process at that time. In this case we would have you still set the alarm with the remote control, but have you leave the 2 sets of keys/ remotes inside the home and have you lock the house with the combo lockbox by the front door. Please make sure you return the key to the lock box before leaving!
On the day of your checkout please do the following:
LAUNDRY:
Leave BEDS UNMADE. Take all beach and bath towels to the laundry room. If you can, start a load of towels as they take a long time to dry. We appreciate it if you can hang used wet towels up so they can dry rather than bundling them up on the ground.
DISHES:
Run the DISHWASHER and return dishes to their proper place
(Note: if you rented both houses, please return items to their proper house to avoid being charged for missing items.) Please let us know if any dishes were broken during your stay with us so that we can replace them.
CLEANING AND TRASH:
Don’t be to concerned with doing a deep thorough cleaning in the home, though a quick cleaning is appreciated to keep the house in better shape and avoid insect infestation. Any food or drink that is still good, even if partially used, please keep it in the fridge. When the maids come to clean after your check-out, they often appreciate being able to take it for them and their families and view it as an informal tip for their services. If they don’t want it, they will discard it for you and clean the fridge.
Please take kitchen TRASH in a trash bag to the garbage can on the street to avoid insect infestation. You can put all recyclable materials in a separate bag and set it outside in the driveway. The manager will take it to the recycling center for you so that way we can do our part to keep Costa Rica Green.
SAFE:
Make sure you’re not leaving valuables in the safe. Please LEAVE SAFES OPEN for our next guests and return the keys to the manager at the end of your stay.
TURN OFF
LIGHTS, FANS & ALL A/C Units!
LOCK
ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS
with dead bolt Leave key in the lockbox.
Give 2 Key Sets to Manager. DO NOT LEAVE ANY KEYS IN THE HOUSE unless directed to do so by manager.
MANAGER HOME INSPECTION
Before you leave, unless otherwise directed, the manager will walk through the home with you to do an inspection and a inventory assessment. If you had anything go wrong, not work or any recommendations for the homes, we would love to get your feedback. Please inform the manger of any problems or of anything that needs repair or replacing, whether the guest is at fault or not, this way we can make sure all problems are remedied for our next clients.
If their is any broken or missing items as a result of guests misuse, the manager will make note of it on the Check in Document and will inform the guest what the fair cost to replace or repair the item will be. This will be charged to the Credit Card listed on the Check in Document. All notes shall be made on the check in contract itself and will be authorized by the guest and manager. Please note: The manager will follow through with the transaction with in three business days of check out. If the client would prefer to pay cash to replace the missing or broken item, this would be preferred by the manager as well and the card number will be deleted from the contract. All this being said and for your peace of mind, we will be completely fair, upfront and honest with the hope of returning the full security deposit to you with out problems. We appreciate your cooperation in this as well as we seek to make our homes as enjoyable as possible for all of our future guests.
Once the check-out process is done, the manager and guest will sign the contract acknowledging everything is in order for a peaceful departure.
SERVICE TIPS: TIPS for cleaning ladies & guards, though not required are much appreciated.

Do the homes Have AC?
Yes our homes are Equipped with AC.
Casa Tucana has individual AC units in all bedrooms and now the living area.
Del Pacifico Estate (AZUL, OCEANA, & EXOTICA) have whole house Central AC controlled from one control for the downstairs and one from the upstairs.
However, our homes have been designed "GREEN". They enjoy fresh breezes most of the day and you might only need the A/C for about an hour or so in the late afternoon when the breezes die down. Each room has ceiling fans and screens on windows so you can open them even at night with out worrying about insects.
Electricity rates are outrageously expensive in Costa Rica and have reached $2,000/month per house!!!!)
Using the A/C can also be NOISY. Who wants to hear that loud buzz while relaxing in this most beautiful setting.
Come to value as we do the symphonic noises of the jungle.
ONLY USE THE A/C WHEN ABSOLUTELY NEEDED!
SET THERMOSTAT AT 80F
This may seem high, but you’ll find that it is comfortable and lets you adapt to the outdoors.
PLEASE CLOSE ALL DOORS & WINDOWS WHEN USING the A/C and
ALWAYS TURN A/C OFF WHEN LEAVING THE HOUSE!
Thank you, we appreciate your cooperation to help us keep our costs down and use less energy!

What is your Electrical Usage Policy?
Being that Electricity is very expensive in Costa Rica and that we want our guests to be conscious, we have an Electrical allotment for each home per day. Each home is allotted a specific daily amount (50 watts for Tucana and 60 watts per day for the Del Pacifico Estate homes) which is included on the rental rate. This will allow your group to enjoy the home for normal usage such as cooking, lights, laundry, and conservative usage of the AC when needed. If you decide that you would like to exceed this included amount you can choose to do so but will be charged for the overtures at $.49 cents (USD) per watt over the allotted 60 per day.
We will take a meeter reading at your check in and show you the location of the meter so you can monitor it yourself. We then will take a reading at checkout and let you know of any excess watts. This can be paid in Cash at the time of checkout.
Here is an example for you:
Check in meter reading: 12345
1 home for 7 nights you would be allotted 70 watts per night x 7 nights for a total of 490 watts of usage during your stay for free.
Allotted Meter reeding : 12345 + 490= 12835 included in your rate
Any amount over this will be charged to the renter.
If you are renting more then one home and one home goes over the allotted wattage and the other goes under the allotted we will count the usage as a total and allow for roll over between homes.

What are my Local Grocery Shopping Options?
For those that would like to have more of a do it yourself experience i.e.: shopping for your own groceries and cooking meals at home, there is a small Local Supermarket in Esterillos Oeste that sells most basic items called Super Sol.
However, for larger and more specific brand name shopping we recommend the “Max X Menos” store on the frontage main road in Jaco Beach about 100 Meters South of Banco National or There is "Maxi Pali" right off the Highway in Jaco. There is also “Auto Mercado” in Herradura which has many specialty items and is on your left hand side 5 minutes north of Jaco Beach.
If you are spending the day down south in Manuel Antonio area, there are grocery stores in both Parrita (15-20 minutes south) or on the highway right outside of Quepos (30 minutes).
You also have plenty of stores along the way to also get food and beverages.
If you have a rental car your first day, you may want to stop at a grocery store in Jaco prior to checking in if you would like to avoid having to drive back to Jaco 20 -30 minutes away.

Are there local Restaurants close to the homes?
One of the fun things about traveling is getting out and experiencing the culture. Going out to eat is a fun way to learn more about Costa Rica and it’s people. There is a restaurant that’s right for every diet and every budget so we hope you will enjoy the different flavors of “Pura Vida” from simple and healthy local cuisine found at Soda’s, to 4 and 5 star dining experiences. We try to give you a bit of both in our recommendations.
