How Far Are the Homes From the Beach?

Casa Tucana:
Casa Tucana is in the Hills Of Esterillos Development, abt 750 meters (1/2 Mile) from the beach (a 3 min. drive or a 15 min. walk.)
Del Pacifico Estate ( Casas Cielo Azul, Oceana & Exotica)
Del Pacifico Homes are abt 1.5 km (1 mile) from Playa Bejuco.
 (a 5 min. Drive  or a 20-30 min. walk)

Can We Walk to the Beach From the Homes?

Despite our close proximity to the beach, A CAR IS DEFINITELY A MUST!   Our homes are perfectly set back from the beach just enough to provide a retreat from heat and insects that so often beset homes that are directly on the beach.  As mentioned above, YOU CAN WALK TO THE BEACH, However, that being said,  we really recommend doing so ONLY if exercise is your goal as it is VERRY warm there and walking with all your beach gear can be a bit much in the heat.  Personally we walk and run to the beach regularly for exercise, but we only do so EARLY in the morning (6-7am) and LATE IN THE AFTERNOON (5-6pm), which is outside of the high temperatures.  For beach surfing outings with Boards or with Children you will need a car.
~
In order to make the most of your trip and to have flexibility to really experience all that Costa Rica’s Central Coast has to offer, we require that all of our guests have a rental car or shuttle service during your stay with us.

For more information on these services please scroll below to the car rental and personal Driver sections.

Which are the local Beaches?

Costa Rica beautiful beaches range from black to white sand.  They go for miles lined with coconut and almond trees, and mangroves too!
The central coast beaches are some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica!
Please view our Beaches page to see many photos and more information on our local Beaches.
~
Our beaches near the house are:  Playa Bejuco, Playa Este, and Playa Oeste,.  A bit further towards Jaco are Playa Hermosa, wrold famous for its great surf,  then Playa Jaco, Playa Herradura  and Playa Escondida.  To the south is Playa Manuel Antonio, a popular tourist attraction
~
For Local Wave Information please go to www.surfline.com
and search for Central America, the search for Esterillos or Bejuco.
For Ferr Tide Chart please use this link Below:
http://crsurfcam.com/tidecharts

Advisory: This Beach while very fun and enjoyable on the correct tide and swell can have strong rip currents at other times.  In such case,  it is not advised to swim there.  It is safe to get your feet wet but not for swimming in the waves.  Please also check the local tide charts and weather and abide by all local placards and signs.

What Is the Closest Airport and How Far Is It?

The closest international airport is the "Juan Santa Maria" International Airport in San Jose, CR (code: SJO)
It is only 80 miles from the homes or a short 1.5  to 2 hours drive on good roads.

Renting a Car At the Airport:  Driving Directions to the Homes
Please read carefully and print a copy to have with you when you arrive at the airport, as this can be somewhat confusing.

When you walk out of the terminal then you will see the highway directly in front of you.
Make a mental note that Jaco is to the left and San Jose is to the right*.
*If you take a taxi or shuttle to get to the Car Rental place, make sure that you are heading toward Jaco!  A lot of people make the mistake of going into San Jose instead.
~
If you are picking up a rental car at the airport,  exit the airport and take the very first offramp which is only a few hundred meters ahead on the right hand side and which points to Alajuela
(Note:  You are .   That will spin you around and point you in the opposite direction heading toward Jaco. You will have to IMMEDIATELY merge onto another road so you want to STAY IN THE LEFT LANE that has a sign pointing to SAN RAMON.
NOTE:  Do NOT take the road to the right with the sign pointing to Alajuela!

If you take a taxi or shuttle to a rental car place,  then you will most likely find yourself initially heading toward San Jose.   Once you get your car, however, ,  you will need to get back on the highway and head back toward the airport.
As you are approaching the airport,  the two left lanes will take you to the airport and the right lane will keep you on the highway where you want to go   AGAIN... make sure that you DO NOT take the first exit to the right that points to Alajuela.
~
From there it's going to take you about 8-10 minutes to where you have TAKE THE RIGHT EXIT, the one that has MANY SIGNS pointing to La Garita, Punta Leona, Orotina and a bunch of other towns and resorts.
~
Once you exit, you're going to immediately turn left and go over the small bridge that passes over the freeway you were one.    At that point, there is a sign that points you toward LOS SUENOS AND JACO**.  You are now on the old road to jaco, you will stay on it for a short while until you connect to the new freeway... we'll explain further.  (**I know, I know.... Why didn't they put that sign before?  don't ask, you're in Costa Rica, and things there are jsut,  well  "different".  Welcome to Pura Vida!
~
Now you need to pay attention because after about 5 minutes after you made that left turn onto the raod to Jaco,  you will see a SOCCER FIELD on your LEFT HAND SIDE.  You will need to MAKE A LEFT TURN THERE.    Once you have done so, you will go down that small road for about 5 minutes until you see the TOLL ROAD.  T. You will be heading in the right direction on that freeway, but you first need to TURN LEFTright before you go under the highway and when you get to the ROUNDABOUT,
make TWO QUICK RIGHTS to get on the road toward JACO (go West my son!).
~
Congratulations, you went through the most difficult part of the trip and you are now on the NEW FREEWAY that will take you to the coast.  Easy sailing from now on, but stay alert and  drive safe as driving habits are "different" down there!
~
You will hit a toll booth in about 5-10 minutes and the fee should be around 625 Colones ($1.25). This is the first of a two
booths you will go though. Tolls range from 450 Colones (90 cents) to $1.25
You can pay in dollars (small $1 bills only!). They will give you the change in Colones- they are very good at that.
~
After another 15 minutes,  you will hit (figuratively speaking of course!)  the 2nd (and last) toll booth.   After the toll you will IMMEDIATELY  MERGE RIGHT to get off the highway onto the coastal road.    This is a tricky exit, with an on-ramp immediately Followed by the OFF RAMP you need to take... Go slow and stay to the left!   You''ll arrive at a roundabout, follow the signs pointing to JACO.
~
Congratulations again!  You are now on the Coastal Hwy,  the COSTARENA, that will take you to Jaco and then on to Esterillos.  You are about half-way to the homes.   Keep on driving through the turns and the grades. You may want to stop at the TARCOLES RIVER BRIDGE and watch the CROCODILES below!   Keep driving, you will go eventually up a long grade, then down it, and at the bottom, you will be arriving in HERRADURA, where the LOS SUENOS resort is.  There is a Super Market there, at the shopping center with the Light House tower, in case you want to get a few things, but remember, no Ice cream...  It will melt!
~
Once you get to Jaco,  you need to stay on the main highway to go the the homes. If you want to see JACO or get some groceries there, you will need to take one of the streets on the right which take you to the downtown.  The  Grocery store is called "Mas x Menos", it's towards the south end of the main street.  Then get back on the COSTARENA.
~
After Jaco, you will head towards and pass through Playa Hermosa (just after the rocky point),  and continue for another 10 or so kilometers toward Esterillos.  There are three parts to Esterillos:  Oeste, Centro and Este.  You do not really see them from the Costarena as they are off to the right.   Here is where the directions vary depending on which home you re staying in.
For Casa Tucana:

TAKE THE RIGHT FORK at the sign that says "Esterillos Oeste"  (a key sign that you are there is that there is a fruit stand that is right BEFORE the turn off).
Head approx. 300 meters down that little road till you see the sign "Hills of Esterillos" which is the first community on the right.

Go to the gate and tell the guard that you are checking into Casa #62 (Seis Dos). They will know you are arriving.

Go straight on the road (it first veers to the right then it takes a sharp left turn up before going up a steep hill (about 200 meter total).  Casa Tucana is the red house JUST BEFORE THE HILL in the very corner of the development. Daniel and Chloe live in the yellow house just before it.
For  DEL PACIFICO Estate or Casa Azul, Oceana & Exotica:

Continue past the “Esterillos Oeste” sign and drive another 5-7 min till you get to a large  White Comercial Plaza that is under construction on the left hand side.  On your left you will see a  large 30 ft  “Town Center Plaza” sign marking the main entrance to our development.   Take a left in the main entrance to the Town Center Plaza (If you see a sign to "Playa Bejuco" on the right, you went too far. go back 100 meters) ~
Drive to the guard gate and tell them you are there to stay in the hill top homes (1, 2, or 3 ) with Pura Vida Casas.  They will take down your info and then you can drive straight onto the dirt road (not the one with the pavers to the left).  Continue abt 1/4 Mi. up the hill till the road ends at the second guard house.  There you will see a sign that reads Pura Vida Casas and the 3 homes on the ridge to your right.  Our homes are  1-3
Casa Cielo Azul is house # 1, Casa Oceana is house #2 ,
and Casa Exotica is house #3.
Welcome to Your Costa Rica Home(s)!

What Are Our Options For Transportation?

In order to have flexibility and to really experience all that Costa Rica’s Central Coast has to offer, we require all of our guests to have a rental car or shuttle service during your stay with us.  Our homes are in the country,  about 15 minutes away from the closest taxi.  Without a car, you will be very limited to do what you want and when you want.  A taxi would also be quite expensive and would probably end up cost ing far more than renting a car. Unlike San Jose which can be a little crazy to drive, the roads on the coast are much easier to navigate and we will be happy to assist you upon your arrival with precise directions to local restaurants, beaches and attractions.

1st Option:  Rent a Car at the Airport.
We have several Preferred and discounted rental companies 1 out of San Jose and several local rental companies out of Jaco Beach. When renting a car in costa rica please be advised that they have mandatory rental insurance here  (even if you Use AMEX) and which is not shown on online quotes but which will be added when you arrive to pickup the car.  This is why, for all week-long rentals, we recommend specific all-inclusive companies that include all basic insurance, as well as a free SJO Airport Shuttle transport.

2nd Option: AIrport Shuttle Service + Rental Car Delivered at the House
if you would like, we can set up an all inclusive Airport Shuttle Service (see below) with our professional chauffeur friend Robert (See below for details).  The rental car will be dropped directly at the house shortly after your arrival there. One additional bonus of using the airport shuttle service, is that they will be able to communicate with us so we know exactly when you will be arriving at the homes and arrange to meet you there.  this is particularly helpful if you want to make a could stops on the way down.

3rd Option:  Personal Chauffeur Service For the Duration of Your Stay
If you are nervous about driving in a foreign country, we can also arrange for your own personal chauffeur service for the duration of your stay. (see below).   He will pick you up at the airport, take you the the homes and be available to you for the duration of your stay.  In such case,  we would need to schedule all your tours and activities in advance to ensure you are able to do everything you want to do on your vacation.

Can You Help Us Arrange a Car Rental ?

YES, we would be happy to.  This is a unique service that saves our clients the hassle of needing to take a taxi from the airport to a nearby car rental agency and then navigate the roads to get to Esterillos on your own.  The companies we have selected are fairly priced and will pick you up at the airport in your rental car and chauffeur you straight to Jaco Beach.  There, they will drop off the driver and you can drive the rest of the way to your rental home yourself.  It's a straight shot from Jaco to the homes anfd should only take 20 minutes or so..

Please see our site link below for rates and info.
Note: Rental cars and shuttles book up REALLY quickly so please let us know ASAP and we would love
to set it up for your convenience at our preferred client discounted rate.

We Don't Want to Drive From the Airport to the Homes:
What Are the Options for the Airport Shuttle Services?

We understand that traveling can be very tiring and driving in a strange locale can be unsettling.  We would love to help you have a smooth and easy ride from the Airport to your vacation home! We can arrange Transportation  FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOME (and vice versa) for you.   In that case, we will also arrange to have a rental car brought directly to the home shortly after your arrival.

Our good friend Robert (a very friendly Costa Rican who speaks great english), has a comfortable van that can load up to 8 people. He charges a fair price of $130* each way (up to 5 persons.  10$pp extra).  For groups of 9 or more we recommend to have him rent a bit larger van ($225*) to accommodate you as his van seats 9 but with the luggage it will not fit everyone.

This is a much better option than picking up a taxi on the curb which will likely cost more.  Robert knows exactly where we live and he can take you right to your front door and help you to unload your bags.  He can stop on the way for crocodile watching and groceries.
Tips are appreciated.   Thanks.

*Prices may slightly vary based upon service provider

How Does the Personal Chauffeur Service For Our Entire Stay Work?

If you prefer not to rent a car at all, we can arrange to have Robert drive you for the duration of your stay as a private Chauffeur.
His daily rates for all inclusive Local Driving (Manuel Antonio, Jaco, Puntarenas, etc.) is $175/day including gas, driver, car and insurance.
~
If you wish to see another part of Costa Rica for a day trip or weekend, ie: Arenal, Monteverde, Santa Teresa, Tamarindo, Puerto Viejo etc. , he can of course drive there for you for an additional charge.  Please contact us to ask about these personalized trips and rates.
~
if you need to accommodate more guests for one day only or the entire time, he also can do LARGE BUS RENTALS or can offer you several vans with drivers.   Please contact us to get quotes on these specific options.

Do You Offer Tour and Activity Planning Services?

YES!!!  Our Home Managers will be happy to help you coordinate Tours and plan your Special Event for you during you stay with us!
